Winter can be tough. Shorter days, colder weather, and less sunlight can affect our mood, energy, and motivation. For older people, and people with dementia or learning disabilities, these seasonal changes can make some days more challenging.
At Aspire, we believe wellbeing is important and can be supported through spending time with others, taking part in social activities, and visiting welcoming, inclusive spaces.
Our Community Hubs in Salford
We have five community hubs across Salford, each offering welcoming spaces, activities, and support for local people.
Alexandra Community Hub
Located on Liverpool Road in Eccles, Alexandra Community Hub supports older people and people with dementia or learning disabilities. It is a warm and friendly place to meet others, enjoy a meal, and take part in a range of social activities.
Brierley Community Hub and Café
In the Walkden and Little Hulton communities, Brierley Community Hub is located on Longshaw Drive, close to Salford Primary Care Together and Salford West Family Hub. The hub offers social groups, activities, and a community café serving home-cooked meals, sweet treats, and refreshments.
St George’s Community Hub and Café
Located in Pendleton, St George’s Community Hub supports people with a range of disabilities and health needs. The hub provides a safe, friendly space where people can meet others and enjoy a variety of fun activities.
Humphrey Booth Resource Centre
The Humphrey Booth Resource Centre in Swinton is the headquarters for Aspire. It is home to the dementia-friendly Forget Me Not Café and provides support for people with dementia, their carers, older people, and those with learning disabilities.
Our community hubs, activities, and cafés play a big role in helping people across Salford stay connected during the winter months.
Routine
Having a regular routine can bring stability, especially during winter when life can feel a little harder. Routines can easily slip when we spend more time indoors or feel less motivated to go out.
Our community hubs and activities give people something to look forward to each week. For people with learning disabilities or dementia, familiar routines and environments can reduce anxiety and help build confidence.
Social Activities
Taking part in activities can boost wellbeing, particularly during the winter months. Our activities are flexible and accessible, and include tai chi, singing for people with dementia, arts and crafts, baking, creative workshops, karaoke, Boogie Beats, box fit, upcycling sessions, drumline, quizzes and many more.
Enjoying activities with others provides social interaction, fun, and support.
Community Cafés
Our cafés are more than just places for food and drink, they are welcoming spaces that help people meet others and feel part of their community. A visit to one of our cafés can help reduce feelings of isolation.
Friendly, inclusive, and accessible, our cafés are an important part of community life in Salford. We have three community cafés:
• Forget Me Not Café, our dementia-friendly café at the Humphrey Booth Resource Centre, Swinton
• St George’s Café, located in St George’s Community Hub, Pendleton
• Brierley Café, based in Brierley Community Hub, Little Hulton
