Alex is part of the catering training programme at Brierley Community Hub, where he is developing his kitchen and baking skills. With the support of Dawn, the Catering Training Officer, and cook Lindsey, Alex has made great progress. As someone with autism, he benefits from extra support to help him achieve his goals.

His mum shared, “Alex has become more confident since starting at Brierley. While he may not enjoy washing up at home, he always clears the pots and tidies up. He looks forward to his days with Dawn and is visibly sad if he has to miss a day. He enjoys telling me about his activities and what he has made.”

Dawn, the Catering Training Manager, said, “Alex has been in the catering training programme for 12 months, and during that time, he has learned so much, including social skills and new kitchen abilities. He’s great at setting tables and handing out utensils before meals. His customer service is excellent, and he enjoys fun conversations with me and Lindsey in the kitchen. He’s also made friends at Brierley, especially during lunch breaks.”

Alex’s interest in cooking, particularly baking, has grown. Dawn explained that Alex has been learning to bake cakes, and they always turn out delicious. All of the daily activities Alex completes in the kitchen ties into his participation in the ASDAN Life Skills and Personal Hygiene courses. These courses, offered as part of the training, have allowed Alex to develop essential life skills while enjoying hands-on experience in the kitchen.

Overall, Alex’s time at Brierley Community Hub has had a positive impact. His confidence, life and social skills have all improved over the past year as well as making new friendships. With continued support from Dawn, Lindsey, and the community hub, Alex is on the right path to achieving his goals and further developing his skills for the future.
