What is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga is a fun and gentle wellbeing activity that combines laughing with deep breathing. You don’t need to be flexible or do yoga poses, you just have to be willing to join in and laugh.
It was created in 1995 by Dr Madan Kataria and is based on the idea that the body gets the same health benefits from laughter, whether it’s real or started on purpose. During a session, people take part in playful laughter exercises, light movement, and breathing. Often, the laughter starts off feeling forced but quickly becomes real as the group relaxes and connects.
Why try Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga can help to:
· Reduce stress
· Lift mood
· Increase oxygen in the body
· Help people feel more connected
With regular sessions, it can support emotional balance, clearer thinking, and overall wellbeing. In today’s busy and stressful world, Laughter Yoga is a reminder that happiness doesn’t always need a reason. Sometimes, choosing to laugh is enough.
Caroline, hosts regular Laughter Yoga sessions at Aspire, and the people we support thoroughly enjoy it.
Caroline said: “I first tried Laughter Yoga during a difficult time in my life and came away feeling much better. It inspired me to train so I could help others feel the same way. I work as a funeral celebrant and Death Coach, so having something light and positive is really important, and Laughter Yoga is perfect for that. It’s simple, effective, and almost anyone can take part. It brings people together, lifts spirits, and boosts mood. Even when I arrive feeling tired or grumpy, I always leave feeling full of energy.”
The next Laughter Yoga sessions will take place at Alexandra Community Hub in Eccles. These free drop-in sessions are coming soon, so keep an eye out for more details.
