Halloween is approaching. For many people, it is an exciting time to dress up in spooky costumes, enjoy sweet treats, and take part in Halloween activities. However, Halloween can be overwhelming for some adults and children with Autism.
Some of the things that can make Halloween difficult include:
• Bright or flashing lights
• Loud noises, music, or shouting
• Sudden changes in routine
• Uncomfortable costumes
• Scary decorations, masks, or spiders
We have put together some tips to help create an autism friendly Halloween.
Choose a sensory friendly costume
A cosy onesie, a themed T-shirt or a small prop can be a simple and comfortable choice instead of a full costume.
Familiarise in advance
Looking at photos of Halloween decorations, costumes, and events ahead of time can help prepare for what might be seen during the celebrations.
Enjoy sensory friendly activities at home
Try baking Halloween themed cakes or biscuits, doing arts and crafts, or having a movie night in a calm, quiet setting.
Adapt trick or treating
Go out in a small group before it gets dark or busy. If that feels overwhelming, create an alternative version at home, such as a trick or treat treasure hunt or a sensory game like digging for sweets in a jelly bowl.
Use visual supports
Prepare for Halloween with a visual countdown or calendar. At Aspire, we use visual aids such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) to help explain upcoming events clearly and reduce anxiety.
Find autism friendly events nearby
